From the principal. I would like to add my congratulations to Georgina Jackson, Jazzie Negrello and the Cobden Technical School Lawn Bowls team for being recognised in the 2016 Corangamite Shire Youth Awards. Georgina received her award in the Visual Arts category in recognition of her talents and passion for photography. Jazzie received an Individual Community Service award for her extensive involvement in the local community through the Youth Council and as a volunteer and organiser of various local events. Our Lawn Bowls Team received their Corangamite Shire Sport (Group) award for winning the State Championship in 2015, competing against both regional and metropolitan schools. The following excerpts are the “Judge’s Comments on the winners”

Georgina Jackson – Visual Arts

All the entries in this category were really impressive and I’d like to encourage each and every one to keep practising and finding their creative voice. My task was to choose just one so my decision is to award it to Georgina Jackson. Georgina has an eye for communicating where she lives through her photography. She has a good understanding of light, colour and composition and her images tell the story of her life. It’s important to interpret where we live or what our story is through art, and I encourage Georgina to continue to dig deep into her passion for capturing the landscape and life around her.

Jazzie Negrello – Community Service (Individual)

The young person selected to receive the award this year is an example to us all in terms of their willingness to give up so much of their personal time to service their community both locally and on a statewide level. This persons’ involvement in the community is extensive.  They participate in local government as a Youth Councillor & member of Dan Tehan’s Reference Group, they are always a willing volunteer to organise local youth events including the Rainbow Run, Battle of the Bands and Movie Days, they provide support & encouragement for their peers as a mentor in the Dream Catcher Program – where they are known for their compassion & empathy, as well as supporting local sporting clubs in various voluntary capacities including as a volunteer for the Sarah Wall’s Netfit program.

In addition to all of this, our young achiever also makes time in their busy schedule to make a weekly visit to spend time with an elderly neighbour – this visit being one of the highlights of his week. There is no doubt that Jazzie Negrello is dedicated to servicing the communities of Corangamite and is a very worthy recipient of the 2016 Youth Award for Community Service by an Individual.

Finally, the Cobden Technical School Lawn Bowls Team – Sport (Group) Outstanding result to win the School Sport Victorian State Championships and competing against both regional and metropolitan schools. Well done to all the team members (picture are Brad and Jayde Campbell and Jack Hookway)
