Transition & Orientation

Phase 1: Open Night and Come-and-Try days
In Term 1, the school hosts an information evening for prospective students and their families. The evening includes a showcase of all the opportunities that are available to your child. Formalities begin with a brief welcome and overview of our programs and facilities. This is followed by small group tours to classrooms where demonstrations and presentations are held.  Individual tours of the school may be  organised before or after this evening by contacting the school for an appointment.

We also invite grade six students to spend a day as a Cobden Technical School student, exploring the classrooms, learning spaces and subjects that they will experience as Year 7 students.

Phase 2: Orientation
This phase centres on families who have made the decision to enrol at our school. In December, enrolled students spend a day as a Year 7 student. At this stage, parents are also interviewed by the Transition Coordinator and information is obtained from the feeder primary schools. This phase ensures students feel comfortable in their new secondary school setting, including navigating their way around the school grounds, and are familiar with their teachers.

Phase 3: Introduction
This final phase focuses on the first few weeks of the school year. There is a designated area solely for Year 7 use which provides a comfortable meeting place where students can foster and develop new friendships. During this time, teachers devote a lot of energy towards learning about our new students and their skill levels across all subjects.  In Term 1, students are  offered the opportunity to attend a trip to Port Fairy. The focus of the trip is to further develop positive relationships and foster general health and well-being.
